Torio, Mariato | Veraguas Panama

Somewhere between the deep green and the big blue; a dream, a lifestyle, a small but burgeoning community…

Torio was originally a small community of fishermen and farm men. Between 1945-60, some people settled in the Torio River basin. These families lived on separate small ranches that were connected by trails. Meetings were practiced, where everyone works to help someone, which is shaping the collaborative spirit of the people of the place.

After a short cycle of cattle raising, the company Torio Golf and Resort, acquired more than 600 hectares of land, more than 15 years ago. These lands, heavily degraded by agricultural activities, have gradually been transformed into a lush tropical jungle, where a new generation of dreamers and entrepreneurs is exploring new ways to create a different and more sustainable lifestyle.

Torio's territory is a refuge; an exotic and underdeveloped place with great abundance and natural beauty.

It is a valley surrounded by gently sloping hills that presents a diversity of ecological niches of tropical jungle, a complex network of creeks and a river that flows into the sea, from where unique views can be appreciated with the most spectacular sunsets in all of Panama.

In recent years, Torio, and in particular the TORIO HILLS project, have experienced considerable population growth, attracting new inhabitants from all over the world, who have migrated to our coast in search of a life project in a region with great potential and that constitute a culturally and socially diverse community in Torio.

Understanding the essence of a site is the basis for being able to develop it.

Torio is a transition zone towards the oldest geological region of Panama, which emerged from the ocean 40 million years ago. It is also an ecological transition zone towards the only primary tropical forest ecosystem located on the Panamanian Pacific slope (besides Darien). Torio is located in the western section of the Azuero peninsula, where the sunsets are the most spectacular in all of Panama. The migratory routes of whales are located on the coasts of Mariato, being the location of Torio the ideal one to start sighting tours. The Torio River basin is made up of 6 different basins, which makes it a region with great water wealth. Only 0.11% of the Panamanian geology presents metamorphic rocks (quartz), and 34% of this small percentage is found in the Torio basin. It is a region of great biodiversity where you can find endemic species of fauna and flora or in danger of extinction. Reforested territory, since the last 15 years: from pasture to secondary forest. The population of the place lives on rural activities such as agriculture, livestock and fishing. These low-impact lifestyles have been transforming and mixing with new residents from all over the world, creating a new multicultural community.
